Douglas Helms, Historian for the Soil Conservation Service, conducted a series of oral history interviews in 1981. The interviewees were all long-time employees of the Soil Conservation Service. Some had started with the Soil Erosion Service under the Department of the Interior before it was transferred to the United States Department of Agriculture and was renamed the Soil Conservation Service (1935). Topics include soil conservation, water conservation, watersheds, soil conservation districts, and erosion problems and control. The collection consists of bound transcripts of the interviews, and photographs. Each interview is preceded by a biography of the interviewee. Interviewees include Wayne Austin, Robert Baum, Roche Bush, William Davy, David Dresback, Oke Eckholm, Raymond Heinen, William Johnson, Verle Kaiser, Lee Morgan, Merrit Penwell, Ervin Peterson, John Phelan, Theodore Plair, William Ralston, John Schwendiman, William Van Dersal, Austin Warnken, Donald Williams, Hollis Williams, Leonard Wohletz, Gordon Zimmerman.
